CAGR Calculator
TIME VALUE OF MONEY · COMPOUND ANNUAL GROWTH RATE
How fast did it really grow? Enter the beginning value, the ending value and the years to get the compound annual growth rate, the total return and the growth multiple.
Use any unit for the values (dollars, coins, followers): only their ratio matters. Years can be a fraction, 2.5 for two and a half.
Compound annual growth rate
12.1353% a year
Total return
150.00%
Growth multiple
2.5x
Continuously compounded rate
11.4536% a year
Years
8
Growing 12.1353% every year for 8 years turns 10,000.00 into 25,000.00. It smooths the path: the real years were not all alike.
How to use the CAGR calculator
- Enter the beginning value: what you started with.
- Enter the ending value: what you have now, or expect to have.
- Enter the number of years between the two, a fraction if needed (2.5 for two and a half).
- Read the compound annual growth rate, the total return and the growth multiple.
CAGR formula
- Growth multiple = ending value / beginning value
- CAGR = multiple^(1 / years) - 1
- Total return = multiple - 1
- Continuously compounded rate = ln(multiple) / years
Worked example: 10,000 to 25,000 in 8 years
- Multiple = 25,000 / 10,000 = 2.5
- 2.5^(1/8) = 1.1213534
- CAGR = 12.14% a year
- Total return = 150%
Growing 12.14% every year for 8 years turns 10,000 into 25,000. The real path was probably bumpier; CAGR only describes the start and the end.

What is CAGR?
The compound annual growth rate is the single steady yearly rate that would turn the beginning value into the ending value over the period. It smooths out the ups and downs of the real years.
What is the CAGR formula?
CAGR = (ending value / beginning value)^(1 / years) - 1. For example, a value that grows 2.5 times in 8 years has a CAGR of 2.5^(1/8) - 1 = 12.14%.
Is CAGR the same as the average annual return?
No. The average of yearly returns ignores compounding and is always at or above the CAGR. Lose 50% then gain 50% and the average is 0%, but you are down 25%, and the CAGR is negative.
Can I use it for something other than money?
Yes: users, revenue, followers, a coin price. Only the ratio between the two values matters, so any unit works, as long as both values use the same one.
What if the value fell?
The CAGR is negative. A value that went from 10,000 to 6,000 in 4 years has a CAGR of -12.0%.
Why can I not enter zero or a negative value?
Growth from zero is undefined and a negative value has no growth rate in this sense. Both values must be above zero, and years must be above zero.
