APR is the nominal yearly rate before compounding; APY is what a year really pays once interest earns interest. Daily is 365 periods, monthly 12. Most pools and staking dashboards quote APY; most loans and cards quote APR.

How to use the APY and APR converter

  1. Choose the direction: APR to APY, or APY to APR.
  2. Enter the rate you were given, in percent a year.
  3. Pick how often it compounds (daily is 365 a year, monthly 12) or continuous.
  4. Read the converted rate, and the same APY stated as an APR at each frequency to compare quotes.

APY and APR formulas

  • APY = (1 + APR / m)^m - 1
  • APR = m x ((1 + APY)^(1 / m) - 1)
  • Continuous: APY = e^APR - 1, APR = ln(1 + APY)

Worked example: 12% APR compounded monthly

  • Rate per period = 12% / 12 = 1%
  • 1.01^12 = 1.126825
  • APY = 12.6825%

Compounding adds 0.6825 points over a year. Compounded daily the same 12% APR gives 12.7475%.

FAQ
Q.01

What is the difference between APY and APR?

APR is the nominal yearly rate before compounding. APY is what a year really pays once each period’s interest earns interest. The same APR gives a higher APY the more often it compounds.

Q.02

How do I convert APR to APY?

APY = (1 + APR / m)^m - 1, where m is the compounding periods a year. A 12% APR compounded monthly is (1 + 0.12 / 12)^12 - 1 = 12.6825%.

Q.03

How do I convert APY to APR?

APR = m x ((1 + APY)^(1 / m) - 1). A 10% APY compounded monthly is an APR of 12 x (1.1^(1/12) - 1) = 9.5690%. The answer depends on m, so the frequency is required.

Q.04

What is continuous compounding?

The limit as periods get infinitely short: APY = e^APR - 1 and APR = ln(1 + APY). A 5% APR compounded continuously is an APY of 5.1271%.

Q.05

Which one do DeFi pools and staking dashboards show?

Many show APY, but whether it assumes you compound daily, per block or per epoch differs by protocol. Convert both quotes to the same compounding before comparing them.

Q.06

Does a high APY mean a high real return?

No. APY is only the rate arithmetic. It does not include fees, token price moves, impermanent loss or the risk that the rate changes or the pool fails.
