Liquidation mechanics on KuCoin
KuCoin Futures ties maintenance margin to a risk limit level. A small XBTUSDTM position sits on level 1 at 0.4%, and the rate climbs with position size to 0.5%, 0.7%, 1% and beyond as the position value passes each limit.
Because the level follows the size of your position, the same entry and leverage gives a different liquidation price for a small account than for a large one. The table below fixes the entry and leverage and changes only the level.
The help center separates the two margin modes. In isolated mode liquidation depends on the position margin, in cross mode on a risk ratio that must reach 100%.
KuCoin Futures risk limit tiers for XBTUSDTM
KuCoin publishes the XBTUSDTM risk limit through its public futures API: twelve levels, each with a maximum leverage, an initial margin and a maintenance margin. The first seven levels are listed here; the rest run from 5× down to 1× with maintenance margin of 10% to 50%. The ranges are the API’s maxRiskLimit values, and the API response does not name their unit. Read on 2026-10-30.
| XBTUSDTM tier | Maintenance margin | Max leverage | Long liq at 10× | Short liq at 10× |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| level 1: up to 250,000 | 0.4% | 125× | $72,289.16 | $87,649.40 |
| level 2: 250,000 to 600,000 | 0.5% | 100× | $72,361.81 | $87,562.19 |
| level 3: 600,000 to 2,500,000 | 0.7% | 75× | $72,507.55 | $87,388.28 |
| level 4: 2,500,000 to 10,000,000 | 1% | 50× | $72,727.27 | $87,128.71 |
| level 5: 10,000,000 to 50,000,000 | 1.7% | 30× | $73,245.17 | $86,529.01 |
| level 6: 50,000,000 to 90,000,000 | 2.5% | 20× | $73,846.15 | $85,853.66 |
| level 7: 90,000,000 to 185,000,000 | 5% | 10× | $75,789.47 | $83,809.52 |
Prices in the last two columns are the calculator’s own result for a 10× position opened at $80,000.00 with that row’s maintenance margin rate: long = entry × (1 − 1/10) / (1 − rate), short = entry × (1 + 1/10) / (1 + rate). From level 1 to level 7 the 10× long moves from $72,289.16 to $75,789.47, so position size alone shifts the trigger by about $3,500. The fee section below quotes KuCoin's venue-wide top leverage; this contract allows 125×.
How KuCoin Futures liquidates a position
In isolated mode the maintenance margin rate depends on the position’s opening value and its risk limit level, and liquidation is triggered when the position margin falls to the maintenance requirement.
In cross mode a position is liquidated only when the risk ratio reaches 100%; at a risk ratio of 95% or more open orders are cancelled first.
If the lowest tier is reached and risk is still not covered, the Insurance Fund takes over. The help articles do not describe auto-deleveraging, so this guide does not either.
Where this calculator and KuCoin differ
- Your tier follows the size of the position, so a larger position faces a higher rate than the small one you size here.
- The help article does not name a default margin mode.

KuCoin fee structure
KuCoin charges maker fee 0.02% and taker fee 0.06% on perpetual futures. Maximum available leverage is 100×. This calculator pre-fills these defaults so you get accurate results without needing to look up the fee schedule. If you are on a VIP tier with discounted fees, adjust the fee fields accordingly.
Maker orders (limit orders that add liquidity) cost less than taker orders (market orders that remove liquidity). On KuCoin, using limit orders for both entry and exit can reduce your total fee cost significantly compared to market orders.

View API & MCP docs →How is liquidation price calculated?
Liquidation price depends on your entry price, leverage and maintenance margin. For a long: liq ≈ entry × (1 − 1/leverage) / (1 − maintenanceMarginRate).
What happens when a position is liquidated?
The exchange forcibly closes your position when losses consume your margin. You lose the full margin used for that position.
What assumptions and edge cases does this calculator use?
Entry price and leverage must be above zero, the maintenance margin rate is a fraction from 0 to 0.2 (default 0.005), and a liquidation fee from 0 to 0.05 can be added. The flat rate is one rate you take from your exchange; for a tiered table give size and 1 to 50 tiers in ascending order, and a table that contradicts itself is refused. Not covered: auto-deleveraging, partial liquidation, mark price versus last price, funding paid while the position is open, and the exchange own engine, which may differ.
What maintenance margin does KuCoin use for XBTUSDTM?
It depends on the risk limit level: 0.4% on level 1, 0.5% on level 2, 0.7% on level 3 and 1% on level 4, rising to 50% on level 12.
What is the maximum leverage on KuCoin XBTUSDTM?
Level 1 allows 125×. The limit falls with each level, to 50× on level 4 and 1× on level 12.
When does KuCoin liquidate a cross margin account?
When the risk ratio reaches 100%. At 95% or more open orders are cancelled first, according to the help center.
Does KuCoin Futures have an insurance fund?
Yes. The help center says that if the lowest tier is reached and risk is still not covered, the Insurance Fund takes over.
What are KuCoin perpetual futures fees?
KuCoin charges maker fee 0.02% and taker fee 0.06%. Maximum leverage is 100×. This calculator uses these defaults but you can adjust them for your actual rate tier.
